After a creditable performance at the World Swimming Championships in Rome where the swimmers notched up 8 best Indian performances, the squad will leave for Tokyo on Friday for the Asian Age Group Swimming Championships. The tournament runs from August 10 to 13.
Rehan Poncha created three best Indian performances at the World Championships.
He described his Rome experience as a “picnic” with lots of exciting races compared to his previous big event which was the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
“Beijing was a lot of pressure as it was my first Olympics and I had to improve my standards. But Rome was more like a holiday combined with some great races,” said the 23-year-old who joined the national camp in Pune after returning on Tuesday.
“I was a little disappointed with my performance in 200m butterfly which happens to be my pet event but I’m happy I have a second chance to break into the two minute mark in Japan” Poncha added. The Bangalore lad bettered national marks in the 200m individual medley (2:06:29), 200m backstroke (2:06:92) and 400m IM (4:31:34).
Sandeep Sejwal, another Olympian who spurred record breaking performances in the 50m breaststroke (0:27:92), 100m breaststroke (1:01:20) and 200m breaststroke (2:13:22), will be eager to grab a couple of medals.
