Somnath Mondal scored the only goal of the match as Western Railway registered an unlikely win in an MDFA Elite division match over Union Bank of India at the Cooperage football ground on Monday.

UBI clearly looked the better side but they squandered a number of easy chances throughout the game. Most of the play in the first half took place inside Western Railway’s half. UBI players showed excellent passing skills in the middle of the pitch but their efforts in the final third left much to be desired.

Their wingers Merwyn Fernandes and Dujon Koli failed to deliver good enough crosses to create chances. Midfielders Lineker Machado and Khalid Siddique performed well for UBI by providing some teasing through balls that exposed the opponents defence on numerous occasions.

UBI striker Rohel Shaikh had an off day as he missed not less than three open chances to score, two of them coming in the first half. Machado also missed out on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Most of the Railway players were kept busy in defence to launch an attack of their own in the first half.

But they came out with an aggressive intent at the beginning of the second period but failed to keep up the momentum as UBI managed to attack them again.

Shaikh threw them a lifeline by missing an easy tap in and they capitalised in the 78th minute by winning a free kick near UBI’s goal. Prakash Patil provided his teammates with a perfect delivery and Mondal glanced home the winner. The Railway men held on to their narrow lead till the end of the game despite some frantic attacks by UBI.

UBI coach Julian D’Souza summed up his sides performance by saying, “It is not possible to win a game with so many chances being missed.”
Earlier, Central Railway registered a 2-0 win over Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF), with Ubaid Ansari scoring both the goals.
