Has John Howard’s campaign to become the vice-president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) hit the dead end?

One will get to know in 24 hours, but at this stage, it appears that the former Australian prime minister has failed to solve the mathematics of the ICC.

On the first day of the ICC’s two-day executive board meeting, seven of the 10 full members told president David Morgan that they are opposed to Howard’s nomination for the ICC post.

That is despite strong lobbying from Cricket Australia and a few key ICC officials. Howard needs support of at least seven members to avoid a major embarrassment.

According to sources, Howard is currently in Singapore, where the ICC is holding its annual conference, and wanted to address the executive board on Wednesday.

It was not clear if the request for an address came from the Australian camp or from Howard himself, but sources have revealed that not many members are keen to listen to him.

In the face of such strong opposition, it is not clear what the ICC board will do or what are the constitutional provisions.

The ICC may have to postpone the election of the vice-president and ask Cricket Australia and Cricket New Zealand to come up with a different name. In that eventuality, NZC’s candidate John Anderson’s name may come up.

CA maintained that it is resolute in its decision. “CA and NZC remain resolute that we have followed the ICC process and complied with criteria. We believe that it is reasonable that our joint nomination be supported,” a CA spokesman told DNA.

When asked what would be its position if it failed to get the numbers, the spokesman said that Australia would wait for the advice of the ICC.

The Indian side is strongly opposed to Howard because of his lack of experience in cricket administration. Sri Lanka, Zimbawe, and South Africa have their own reasons while Pakistan, Bangladesh and West Indies are sailing with the majority.
