Hockey Championship: Haryana bag maiden national title

Favourites Haryana edged out dark horse Orissa 3-2 in the penalty shootout for a 5-4 aggregate victory to lift the 1st Hockey India Junior National hockey title.

    Favourites Haryana edged out dark horse Orissa 3-2 in the penalty shootout for a 5-4 aggregate victory to lift the 1st Hockey India Junior National hockey title. The two sides were locked 2-2 at the end of the regulation time.

    The new penalty shootout format, wherein a player starts from 30-yard line with the goalkeeper under the bar and has eight seconds to beat, was introduced for the first time in the nationals.

    Haryana went 1-0 up through Manish Rana’s goal. Orissa rallied through Mikhal Barla and Bikas Kujur. Although Haryana’s Siddhant Gautam failed to score, Ranjit Singh and Naveen Antil made sure they had the last laugh.

    In the regulation time, it was Orissa who took the lead through Ignacius Toppo in the 6th minute. Haryana found gaps but couldn’t exploit it as the Orissa defence stood firm.
    It took 17 minutes into the second half for Haryana to get their

    bearing and equalise, thanks to Manish Rana. Prolific scorer Ranjit Singh put Haryana in the lead three minutes later and the eventual winners held on to the one-goal advantage till the last minute when rival skipper Minz, set up by Barla, helped Orissa draw level with a blinder.

    The 15 minutes of extra-time, however, failed to break the deadlock which led to the penalty shootout in which Haryana emerged on top.

    Results: Final: Haryana 5 (Manish Rana 2, Ranjit Singh 2, Naveen Antil) bt Orissa 4 (Ignacius Toppo, Stanley Minz, Mikhal Barla, Bikas Kujur)

    Third-place match: Punjab 6 (Sukhmanjit Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Mandeep Singh, Varun Kumar, Harsahib Singh, Gaganpreet Singh) bt Jharkhand 1 (Rajin Khandulna)
