Football fans in Ahmedabad, especially the newlyweds, seem to have taken the term ‘fan following’ rather literally. If the emerging trend holds, a large number of the city’s newlyweds will be seen honeymooning in Johannesburg (South Africa), where the FIFA World Cup 2010 is scheduled to kick off from June 11.

Couples in the city are infected with football mania, to the extent that many have even rescheduled their honeymoon dates to be able to watch the Gods of football play in Johannesburg.

One such football fan is J Khokhri, who got married on May 23, but has delayed his honeymoon by a week. “I had opted for a 12-day honeymoon package to South Africa. But I had it rescheduled by a week because I badly want to be in Johannesburg to watch the World Cup matches, if not all, at least one,” he said.

Rohit Brahmbhatt has also joined the bandwagon. He got married on June 1, and has booked a 10-day package for South Africa. He will be in Johannesburg for almost three days to be part of the FIFA World Cup. “I also managed to get tickets for one of the matches,” he said with a smile. Sohini, his wife, may not have had a say in choosing their honeymoon destination but is happy nonetheless.

“I’m not a football enthusiast, but I would love to see the stadium,” she said.

“Besides, there are other beautiful places to visit in the city like
the Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg Art Gallery and the Johannesburg Planetarium. I’m hoping our honeymoon will be both fun and exciting,” she added.

“I’m a little let down because David Beckham is not part of the England team this year. But I’m glad that I will be able to watch some of the best teams of the world play football,” said Ayush Shah, another newlywed who will also be in Johannesburg with his wife around that time.

While it’s a planned trip for most, it will be a surprise for some others. Renu Jha is getting married on June 10, and is planning to surprise her husband by booking tickets to South Africa. “My fiancee; has left the entire planning of our honeymoon to me, and I have decided to go to South Africa,” she said. “It will be the best time to go there as the entire nation would be in the mood to celebrate,” she said with much excitement.
