Currency, accreditation cards, mobile phones, passports — these are what athletes and officials lost during the past fortnight in the recently concluded Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Police registered nine cases and made 15 non-cognisable entries at the police station set up at the Games Village exclusively to deal with cases related to athletes and officials.

The Indian victims included bronze medal winner Seema Antil, who lost her accreditation card, athlete NV Nishad Kumar, who misplaced his wallet containing Rs7,000, driving licence and an identity card, and synchro-swimmer Avani Dave, who lost her mobile phone. Chandrodaya Narain Singh too lost his accreditation card.

"We have registered nine cases. Except for two cases, most of them are of petty thefts," Delhi police commissioner YS Dadwal told reporters here at a press conference.

Most prominent among the cases registered was that of a Welsh athlete who said an unknown person harassed her and wanted to take her photograph by force.

Another case was registered after three Ugandan officials got injured due to the malfunction of a tyre killer, a security device, at the village. On the complaint of the driver, a case was registered.

The Delhi police have constituted a technical committee with members from IIT Rourkee to look into the matter. "It is a technical fault," Dadwal said.

Pakistan's chef-de-mission SMA Shah also approached the police after Rs25,000 went missing from his wallet kept in his room when he had gone for breakfast.

Six other cases were registered on complaints by officials from England Grenadines, Australia and Bahamas.

"We received complaints that Rs36,000, US$1570, Australian $550, Eastern Caribbean $380, €100 and £60 were missing," a senior police officer said.

JN Durhan of Trinidad and Tobago reported that she had misplaced a bag containing her make-up kit and phone charger while Christian Campell of Sierra Leone said he had lost a team leader guide booklet, US $20 and Rs500 when he was going to the dinner hall. Zambian squash coach Phillip Musonda reported that he lost his passport.
