Tottenham Hotspur completed a marvellous first Champions League group-stage campaign when they drew 3-3 at Twente Enschede on Tuesday to secure the top spot in Group A above holders Inter Milan.

Spurs, who scored 18 goals in their six group games, were gifted an early lead with a Peter Wisgerhof own goal before Denny Landzaat equalised from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute.

In an action-packed second half, Jermain Defoe put the Londoners ahead two minutes after the restart, Roberto Rosales levelled with a header, then Defoe put the visitors ahead for the third time, only for Nacer Chadli to curl in a brilliant free kick and make it 3-3 after 64 minutes.

With Inter losing 3-0 at Werder Bremen, Spurs topped the group on 11 points, one ahead of the Italians.

Twente, already assured of a place in the Europa League, finished third on six, with Werder on five.

Tottenham have fashioned some terrific goals during their action-packed journey through the group stage, but they were lucky with their opener on a freezing night in the Dutch town.

After 12 minutes, 40-year-old 'keeper Sander Boschker, given his Champions League debut as something of a long-service award after more than 20 years at the club, swung a wild boot at Wisgerhof's backpass and missed it.

Landzaat levelled from the spot, after his first effort was ordered to be re-taken for encroachment, after Benoit Assou-Ekotto had been penalised for handball when he lifted his arm to his face to block a Rosales shot.

Two minutes after the restart, a clever reverse pass by Aaron Lennon set up Defoe to score from close range and spark a wild 20 minutes of end-to-end action.

Rosales levelled after 56 minutes with a powerful header almost from the edge of the box only for Defoe to strike again after Wilson Palacios robbed Theo Janssen but saw his shot parried by Boschker.

Twente came back again, however, with Chadli curving a dipping free kick over the wall and beyond Heurelho Gomes.

There were further chances for either side but in the end the result suited both teams as they look ahead to more European action later in the season.
