During his Lok Sabha campaign, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi often regretted that the benefits of welfare schemes rarely reached the common man. After the party’s historic win in the polls, the Gandhi scion wants to change all that.

Rahul has asked his youth brigade to monitor the implementation of schemes such as the NREGA at the grassroots. For the past year, Rahul has been building a dedicated youth cadre across the country through an exhaustive membership drive. The Amethi MP, who is in charge of the party’s youth organisations, has initiated an aam aadmi ka sipahi programme under which members of Youth Congress and NSUI are required to keep tabs on the implementation of welfare schemes. Over 10 lakh youths have already joined the initiative.

“Rahulji is determined to ensure implementation of all social sector schemes. The UPA government has already promised streamlining of its flagship programmes such as the NREGA.

Rahulji wants Youth Congress and NSUI members to interact with villagers and give feedback on the implementation of schemes,” Ashok Tanwar, national president, Youth Congress, said.

“As part of the aam aadmi ka sipahi initiative, we will brief Youth Congress members on the party’s welfare schemes, so that they oversee their implementation,” Tanwar said.

Rahul has also asked his team of young parliamentarians to spend time with villagers in their constituencies. “We’ve been told that when parliament is not in session, we must dedicate time to rural and semi-rural areas. Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahulji want a humane approach in politics,” Arun Yadav, minister of state for youth and sports affairs and party MP from Khandwa, said.
