Chief minister Narendra Modi seems never to get a fill of organising fairs in the state. After the global Gujarat 2009 razzmatazz, this time his government has another mega event in the pipeline. For the purpose, the state's non resident Gujarati (NRG) department, activities of which were also identical to its nomenclature, has been shaken awake from its deep stupor.

As is many of the government departments, this department too has often had to suffer ignominy, being labelled as non-significant.  But things are set to change this July, if the government's plans to organise the first-ever mega cross country non-resident Gujarati convention in the state comes true. However, the final dates for the mega meet await the chief minister's approval, sources said.

The meet hopes to unite Gujaratis scattered across the country and revive the community's bonding with the state with an aim of furthering the state's development. More then 50 NRG bodies from various states including Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar among others besides over 250 prominent NRG leaders are expected to participate in two-day convention.

On day one of the meet, seminars will be organised to improve ties between the NRGs, the state government and people living in the state. There will also be an exposure tour for the guests. Around three to four years ago, the state government had organised a tour of the various states for the state's ministers and MLAs in this regard and thereafter this is the first attempt to organise such a gathering.

Sources further said that the state government plans to hold regional NRG conventions in various parts of the state including places like Charotar, Kutch, Saurashtra, and south Gujarat during the annual NRG season from November to February, for the non-resident Gujaratis who live abroad. "To strengthen NRG-related activities in the state, the state government is also likely to increase the concerned department's budget from Rs1 crore per annum to Rs3 crore from the current financial year," sources said.

The state government also runs a scheme for funding Rs10 lakh for building NRG Bhavan (buildings) in various states. Under this scheme buildings have been constructed at various places like Kanyakumari, Bhopal, Udepur among many other states.
