With Commonwealth Games just 15 months away, the Delhi government has finalised a blueprint to train 25,000 volunteers on the lines of the technique used in Melbourne, which successfully managed the mega sports event in 2006.

There will be a requirement of 25,000 trained volunteers in different categories to manage the Games next year and steps are being taken to train them for the event, a senior Tourism Ministry official said.

He said the Melbourne model is being adopted to prepare volunteers for the games. Melbourne, which hosted the last Commonwealth Games in 2006, had successfully managed the mega event with a substantial force of trained volunteers.

The Tourism Ministry has been given the task of preparing 3,000 volunteers in the hospitality and tourist category.

"We have devised the training capsule for these young volunteers to be trained at our Pusa Institute in batches," the official said.

Volunteers are being shortlisted and the three-week training programme will be started shortly.

There will be volunteers in other categories including first-aid, security and traffic, field, parking lot and city volunteers.

The volunteers are being trained as part of the capacity building exercise for the Commonwealth Games 2010. There is a requirement of 5,000 city volunteers for the Games.

"City volunteers, who will be trained by Delhi government, will guide visitors to tourists places and to shopping complexes," the official said.

The Government will also roping in the NCC and scout guides as security and traffic volunteers for the Games.

"There will be around 10,000 security and traffic volunteers to help the traffic police in managing the traffic and crowds during the Games. They will be trained by Delhi Police," said the official.

The volunteers will be provided with uniforms and the dress code will vary for each category. A prominent fashion house is being roped in to design the uniforms.

Every volunteer will be given general training for three days after the completion of their course in different categories.
