Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu said on Wednesday there was no change in his party's stand on Telangana, thereby putting at rest all speculation that the party would do a re-think on the separate statehood issue following its recent electoral setback in Andhra Pradesh.

"There will be some minor hiccups but once we have taken a political decision there should not be any going back, Chandrababu said," addressing a huge gathering of party workers after inaugurating the TDPs two-day annual conference 'Mahanadu' in Secunderabad.

The TDP, in late 2008, took a policy decision favouring statehood for Telangana. It was a complete reversal of its earlier stand for a unified Andhra Pradesh.

Following this, the separatist outfit Telangana Rashtra Samiti joined hands with the TDP, which led a Grand Alliance by roping in the CPI and the CPM as well.

However, the Grand Alliance failed to capture power in Andhra Pradesh even as the TRS faced a virtual rout in its supposed stronghold Telangana. The TDP too did not do well, as largely expected, in Telangana, considered its old bastion.

The TDPs pro-Telangana stance also had its impact in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions where people are largely opposed to the division of the state. The ruling Congress fared better than the TDP in these two regions. This prompted many senior leaders in the TDP to declare that their pro-Telangana stand did the party in across the state.

They went to the extent of demanding that the party needed to do a re-think on the Telangana issue and suggested that the subject would be taken up for discussion at the 'Mahanadu'. The TDP chief, however, was categorical in stating that the party need not change its stand even if it suffered a setback in the recent elections.

"Such setbacks are natural in the political process but we should remain consistent on our political policies," Chandrababu Naidu said. The TDP has decided not to adopt any political resolution at the two-day annual conference this time.
