Themclones, the New Delhi-based pop-rock band could use some advice from you. Before you catch them live today, stop by their virtual residence and tell them what songs they need to include in  their debut album: Love. Hate. Heroes. Won’t that be a spoiler?, I enquire. “Not really,” assures Prithwish Dev, the band’s lead vocalist, “We have one to two minute clips of 17 of our songs on our website and we’re counting on fans to pick ten of their favourite songs. These span across the years that we’ve been playing.”

Passing through Bangalore, one of the eight stopovers of their ‘My life’ tour, the band echoes the opinions of the city’s music lovers.
“The city’s ban on live music doesn’t make sense, people must have the right to enjoy their music,” says Surijit Dev, the band’s drummer, while Clarence Gonsalves, the bassist, agrees that the ban on live music is a dampener:  “People can’t headbang while music is played? That doesn’t seem right.”

But the band agrees that Bangalore, which has been the stage for various international acts, like other Indian cities, has evolved to appreciating original music. “When we first started playing in 2000, the audience wanted 50 per cent of covers to be played, but now the audience is so much more eager about listening to original music, which is great,”says Surijit.

Apart from the democratic voting system online, the band is also out with a slick animation video featuring a Themclones super hero for their song ‘My Life’.

“The video will be on air on VH1 soon, and was designed by a friend of mine, Abhinav Tripati who loved the song and offered to make an animation video,” informs Gonsalves. The senseless cliche of ‘what to expect’ from this album is answered gracefully.

“Fans have been expecting this album for years. What they’ll finally have is a great, well-produced, well-packaged album.” And about the songs, the clones leave that to you.
