Harsh Goenka is an avid art connoisseur and an industrialist of great repute. And now he will have another feather in his hat. He is the chairperson of NGMA (National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai), an institute that opened in Delhi in 1954 and then branched out in Mumbai. NGMA used to be a vibrant place but it has been missing the buzz for a long time now. To revive the same, Harsh is planning to attract the youth. “We are planning to organise interesting art lectures and seminars and invite school and college students who can learn more about art. Also, we are planning to re-open the cafeteria and make it a cool place to hang out alongside a museum store that will stock mugs, t-shirts etc, with interesting art works on them.” He is not just planning to make a busy NGMA calendar by showing many different kinds of art shows; he is also planning to have cutting-edge, contemporary shows quite often that will be loved by the youth.

“The whole idea is to bring back people and vibrancy to NGMA,” asserts Harsh. “In the last few years, there were two to three nice exhibitions but for much of the time, NGMA was just not attracting people. And on the other hand, Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sanghralaya (formerly The Prince of Wales Museum) attracts lots of people. Tightly curated shows and travelling shows are on the agenda.”

Harsh adds, “NGMA has been a great institution. It’s not commercial. It started off on a good note but in the last few years it has been lukewarm. Reason being, there was inadequacy in terms of staffing and there was no one clear person to lead the institution.”

Harsh plans to…
Seek interest of private sectors in NGMA
Get renowned and expert art curators to curate shows
Urge art collectors to show their art collections at NGMA
