A fast track court here on Tuesday sentenced Dipak Bhattacharya, who killed his 14-year-old son for not winning a local table tennis tournament two years ago, to seven years in jail, much to the disappointment of his family members who wanted him to be sentenced to life.

A day after convicting him for causing death of his son Biswadip, Alipore Fast Track Court sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment besides a fine of Rs 2,000, failing which the convict has to undergo an additional three-month jail term. Judge P Burman on Monday found him guilty under section 304 (ii) (if act is done with knowledge that it is likely to cause death but without any intention to cause death).

Bhattacharya's wife Papiya, daughter Neha and others in the family were unhappy with the quantum of punishment and wanted a life term for the man who had killed his son, who was a member of the medal winning Bengal team in the sub-junior national T T champsionship in 2004. Biswadip's aunt Bandana Acharya said outside the court
that the family was not happy with the judgement.

"We fear he will take revenge after his release from jail," she said.

Bhattacharya, who was alleged to be very authoritarian in his attitude towards the family members, would hold rigorous training sessions for his son and when he became tired or
failed to win a tournament, he would beat him up mercilessly.

On the fateful day of January eight 2007, Bhattacharya, in an fit of rage hurled a T T bat he once gifted to his son that hit Biswadip's abdomen causing fatal injuries.
