A week after Dipesh Thakkar was accused of murdering his girlfriend, Bhumi Upadhyay, a tip-off from his brother-in-law led to his arrest. Dipesh was nabbed by police on Saturday as he arrived at a hotel to meet his brother-in-law.
On Saturday, Dipesh’s brother-in-law, Ronald Thakkar, who works at Nalanda hotel in Mithakali, informed the police control room that Dipesh was on his way to meet him.
The police control room informed the Navrangpura police station. Police officers from the Navrangpura and Maninagar police stations reached the hotel and arrested Dipesh.
According to the statement given by Dipesh, he murdered Bhumi after she turned down his offer of marriage and got engaged to another man.
Bhumi taught at the tuition classes run by Dipesh and the two had been having an affair since the past couple of years. However, Bhumi’s parents were not in favour of their relationship as Dipesh was involved with other women too.
During investigation, the police found that Dipesh was involved with two girls apart from Bhumi and he had tried to kill a minor girl with whom he was having an affair, in 2003.
In his statement, Dipesh said that Bhumi had gone to Dipesh’s residence at 11.30 am on the day of the murder, to teach students. There he served her a cup of coffee that was poisoned and then strangled her. He dumped her body in the water tank in his society. Bhumi’s body was fished out from the water tank of Prerna Tirth society, Maninagar last Saturday.
Dipesh has accepted sole responsibility for the murder but said that his family members helped him destroy evidence. The police are yet to trace Dipesh’s whereabouts from the day of murder until his arrest. They had searched for him at Kalol and Kadi according to information received by them, but they failed to trace him.
