With the robotics competition turning out to be the hottest event among the participating students, the fourth annual tech-fest of Nirma University, ‘Vidhyut Adbhutam – 2009’ kicked off on Tuesday. The two day event is being hosted by Electrical Engineering Students’ Association (EESA) of Nirma University.

With around 80 teams participating in the event called ‘Bot v/s Wild’, it had the maximum entries for the day. Students showcased their engineering skills by challenging the effectiveness of their custom made robots against the others’. Viren Pandya, assistant professor, Nirma University said, “We have specially designed and built the tracks and other arenas to present challenges for robots.”

The participating students had different reasons for their participation in the competition. Maharshi Patel, a student of GH College of Engineering and Technology, Vallabh Vidyanagar said, “Making these robots, all by ourselves was a learning experience and the competition that follows, adds to the fun.

This exposure shows the positive as well as negative points of our machines, teaches us different designs and techniques of making these machines.” Another participant Yashkaran Gill from Nirma itself said, “Winning is not the only aim. Our skills are explored and enhanced by competing with students from not only our department but from other universities too.”

The challenges faced by the car-like robots were to pass though hurdles including sand, slopes, greasy areas, spike hanger, speed breakers and blind areas.

The event drew over 500 participants from colleges across the state and beyond. Talking about the event, Pandya said, “This fest aims to provide a platform for the graduate level students to showcase their talent and compete to gain practical excellence in their respective fields.”

The first day of the event also saw other events like business plan competitions and paper presentations on various topics. Neel Shah, chief coordinator of ‘Vidhyut Adbhutam 2009’ said, “Organising this event right from scratch to success made us understand various management’s do’s and don’ts. It has made us confident enough to face the world beyond our campus.”
