Bungalows 12-16 on a bylane of Gurudwara Rakabganj Road wore a busy look on Saturday. The bungalows will be the scene of the grand Third Front dinner to be hosted by UP chief minister and prime ministerial hopeful Mayawati.

Vehicles carrying UP government labels and the omnipotent red lights on top were parked outside the bungalows. “We are just putting some finishing touches for the grih pravesh tomorrow,” said an official as he quickly ducked out of sight. The dinner is being hosted as a “house warming” party by Maywati. Just over the tall walls, sandstone was being sanded, and labourers were still hard at work.

The hard work is evident in the fact that she has been guaranteed full attendance by her Third Front leaders. “Till now, Prakash Karat of the CPI(M), AB Bardhan of the CPI, N Chandrababu Naidu of the Telegu Desam (TDP), Deve Gowda of the Janata Dal (S), K Chandrashekhara Rao of the Telengana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and Dr V Maitreyan of the AIADMK have confirmed that they will be attending,” said a source in the BSP.

The food will be catered from ITC Maurya Sheraton, with “the best of Indian food and some signature dishes from their renowned restaurants,” said a source at the hotel.
Such is the buildup to the dinner that reporters and even some supporters of BSP reached Indira Gandhi International Airport’s domestic terminal after a rumour spread that Mayawati would be landing at 12.30pm. She did not arrive and had not reached Delhi till late evening, but supporters had already started keeping a vigil at Gurudwara Rakab Ganj road along with the media.

While the Left parties and the AIADMK have dampened Mayawati’s spirit a little by refusing to declare her the Third Front’s choice for PM, she is said to be eager to build bridges with the group.
