Most young parliamentarians have failed to impress in the corridors of power. They did not do their job properly, says a study by Centre for Policy Research on the parliamentarians in the 14th Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi managed an above-average attendance (63%), but the Congress heir took part in only five debates and asked just three questions.

Omar Abdullah of National Conference too failed to make an impression, as he took part in only six debates and did not ask any questions.

The most active young MP was BJP’s Dushyant Singh, son of Vasundhara Raje Scindia, who represents Jhalawar, Rajasthan. He asked 604 questions, highest amongst all young parliamentarians, and spoke 46 times in debates. With 63% attendance, he outdid all.

On the other hand, the performance of BJP’s Manvendra Sing, son of BJP leader Jaswant Singh, was dismal, as he took part in 15 debates but didn’t ask any questions though he had 75% attendance.

The Congress too had some active parliamentarians in Naveen Jindal from Kurukshetra and Milind Deora from Mumbai south. While Jindal asked 376 questions in five years, Deora had a 472-question list before the government. Jindal and Deora took part in 35 and 10 debates, respectively. Both the MPs had more than 70% attendance.

The performance of Congress MP from Mumbai northwest Priya Dutt was below average. Though she asked 31 questions about her constituency and policies, she spoke only in four debates and had just 46% attendance.

Congress MP Sachin Pilot’s performance was equally bleak. He asked one question and took part in 12 debates. Pilot attended 82% working days, which is highest among all young MPs.

East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, son of Delhi CM, didn’t ask any questions. He took part in 38 debates and had 84% attendance.

The performance of Akhilesh Yadav, son of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh, was dull as he attended only 35% of the working days and took part in debates just once. He had 17 questions to ask his fellow parliamentarians.
