The grand old man of Jaipur, Girdhari Lal Bhargav, is no more. The receding hairline and toothy grin that represented Jaipur in the parliament for 20 long years was lost forever on Sunday when Bhargav, 72, died of a cardiac arrest in the Apollo hospital in Ahmedabad. Bhargav is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters. His funeral will be held in Jaipur on Monday.

Just a few days earlier, the BJP had declared him its candidate in general elections from Jaipur for a record seventh time in a row. He represented Jaipur for six straight terms as MP, an incredible and unparalleled feat in Rajasthan.

Chief executive officer of Apollo hospital, Ahmedabad, Dr Prafull Pawar told DNA, “Bhargav was brought to the hospital at around 7 am on Sunday. He was complaining of uneasiness. Barely five minutes after he was admitted, he was struck by a cardiac arrest.” Bhargav passed away around 8 am on Sunday.

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and governor Naval Kishore Sharma were among the first to visit the deceased BJP leader and pay homage to him. A grieving Modi said “The BJP stalwart’s death is a major loss to the party. We have lost a dedicated leader.” The governor said Bhargav was a true gentleman who was always willing to help others.

Bhargav’s body was flown into Jaipur by an ONGC helicopter in the evening. Bhargav’s wife was with him in Ahmedabad, where the MP had gone to attend a parliamentary committee meeting. “She was in a state of shock and remained unconscious for sometime after she was informed of her husband’s demise,” a hospital staff said.

Bhargav’s son, Manoj, had earlier arrived in Ahmedabad to accompany his father’s body to Jaipur. The deceased leader’s body was received by an army of BJP workers and leaders at Sanganer international airport in Jaipur where they had started gathering since late noon. His body was taken to the BJP headquarters on Sardar
Patel Marg where workers from across the state paid their tributes.
Senior leaders of the BJP, including former chief minister Vasundhara Raje, offered their condolences at his residence in the Purani Basti.

Bhargava, despite being a senior leader, could often be seen riding a scooter or walking on foot and his house was always open for public. He was elected MP from Jaipur for the first time in 1979.
