As investigators looked into possible "militant and extra-Bangladesh links" to recent BDR mutiny, premier Sheikh Hasina has warned that "conspirators" of the revolt still wanted to trigger a "civil war" in the country amid reports that over 250 rebel soldiers remained untraced.

"The aim of the conspirators, who had staged the bloody incidents at BDR headquarters killing scores of brilliant army officers, was to trigger anarchy and push the country to the brink of a civil war... They (mutiny masterminds) still want to set off a civil war," she said during a discussion at her Awami League party's meeting here on Saturday.

The 33-hour mutiny by the rebel BDR soldiers on February 25-26 had claimed 77 lives, 73 of them Army officers.

However, Hasina said that her government, which came to power after her party swept the December 29 general elections, had successfully tackled the crisis.

She urged all to be alert so that the perpetrators could not commit similar crimes again in their bid to destroy the country's democracy, which was restored after the landmark polls following two years of state of emergency.

He comments came as the Daily Star newspaper, quoting investigation sources, reported that over 250 suspected BDR mutineers were still on the run, defying government orders to get back to barracks.

Officials familiar with the investigation into the 33-hour revolt in the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on February 25-26 said that more than 150 rebel soldiers were identified after screening of photographs and video footages while 36 had been detained so far.

"We have been using the television footages and still photographs captured by the journalists during the mutiny to identify the rebels while interrogation of the arrested soldiers was underway," an official said.

The official, who did not wish to be named, said investigators were also trying to unearth possible militant and extra-Bangladesh links to the massacre, examining the background of the rebel soldiers.

Meanwhile, a team of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is to arrive in Dhaka shortly to help Bangladesh probe the BDR mutiny.

Bangladesh foreign minister Dipu Moni said an advance team of the FBI would arrive shortly to help in the probe.

She said the FBI team is coming at the request of government. She, however, did not give details of the FBI team and its terms of reference of the investigation, the Daily Star newspaper said.
