Three militants who laid down arms - two from J&K and one from Punjab - will soon be take classes at the Sarhad Research Centre for the Management of Counter Terrorism and Peace in Pune where they will teach students how to handle crisis situation as well as help them understand the psyche of terrorists.

Roped in as visiting faculty, the three former militants, whose names have not yet been identified, will teach along with retired defence officers.

Sarhad president Sanjay Nahar told DNA that these former militants will also share their experiences about how the terror organisations influence the youths to join them.

The centre, run by Sarhad, a non-governmental organisation, will launch two courses - a two year part-time post graduate programme in counter terrorism and peace management, and a year-long certificate course in counter terrorism and peace management - from the coming academic year at its Katraj campus.

Along with the three former militants, a mother of a militant, whose son was killed by the Punjab police, will also share her experiences. “After the realisation that they had committed mistakes by killing innocent people for no reason, the three militants surrendered before the Indian government between 1996 and 2000 and were given amnesty,” Nahar explained.

Nahar however declined to identify them. “Once they come to the city to teach the students, then everyone will come to know about them.”

The two courses, he said, are meant for the working professionals to help them handle a crisis. He said that Sarhad have been in contact with around 200 companies to offer the course.

“The aim behind starting the courses is to make the youth aware about all forms of terrorism, right from economic to violence,” Nahar said. “Around 15 faculty, including senior retired army officials, sociologists and political experts will teach the students,” he said.

“The three former militants will lecture on different types of terrorism and their ideology, terrorism and human rights, he said. Course content was finalised by former VC of Aligarh Muslim University, MU Rehman.
