Seeking to distance Hindu organisations from the demolition of the Babri Masjid, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief KS Sudarshan said here on Saturday that the mosque was demolished by government men and not by karsevaks.

"The mosque was demolished by government men and not by karsevaks," he told a gathering of RSS cadre and the public at a meeting.

Without explaining whether he was referring to the Kalyan Singh-led BJP government, which was ruling Uttar Pradesh at the time, or the Congress government at the Centre headed by prime minister PV Narasimha Rao, he said he was present in Ayodhya and wanted to build the Ram temple at an undisputed spot but could not do so as government men demolished the mosque on December 6, 1992.

Sudarshan, who came here on Friday for a three-day function of the RSS Madhya Bharat Pranth, said the names of Hindu organisations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal were dragged into the conspiracy.

"The English people have left the country, but their language still dominates the minds of a large number of people in India," he remarked.

Sudarshan said Hindus are the backbone of the country and if the backbone weakens, the country weakens too. "Hindus and Hindutva are the soul of the nation," he said.
