Synapse, the much awaited annual cultural festival of Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT), Gandhinagar, was inaugurated on Thursday.

The three-day fest kicked off on an intellectual note with a lecture on renewable energy and then got into a rhythm with a riveting tabla performance by Tabla Ecstasy, a part of Rhythm Riders Productions. Comprising protégés of classical musician Pt Divyang Vakil, the four-man band set an energetic tempo for the jam-packed day to follow.

Synapse promises to appeal to the brainy and the artistic alike with events and
competitions, where participants can be in the running for cash and prizes worth up to Rs6 lakh. Friday will open in a dramatic way and will see students from Delhi University and Dayal Singh Evening College defend their titles at Naivete, the street play competition.

Other highlights will include Water Counter Strike, a game involving water balloons and water guns filled with Holi-colours; robotic workshop Robo-Kriti; and singing, instrumental music and folk dance competitions, which will see students from across India, battle it out on stage.

Most awaited is the Rampage, a fashion competition where other colleges plan to give defending champions, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), a run for the their money.

Also starting on Friday is Battledrome, Gujarat’s biggest gaming competition where participants will show their mettle in video games Counter Strike, DOTA, NFS and Age of Empires.

The festival is open to the public with passes for celebrity performances by singer Toshi, who sang for the latest release Raaz 2, along with fellow Star Voice of India participant Mirande Shah and Bhumik, and India’s biggest metal rock band Kryptos, on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Passes will be sold at the institute gate for Rs50 for college students and Rs100 for outsiders. Organisers are expecting to draw in about 5,000 people, mainly from neighbouring colleges like NIFT, GNLU, NID, IPTG, as well as those from Ahmedabad.

Some 15 colleges will participate in the event, while thousands from over 50 colleges across India have already registered in for the online events.
