Gangster Om Prakash alias Babloo Srivastava, who wrecked havoc in several northern states and Mumbai in the 1980s and 1990s with his extortion calls and daring kidnappings, is likely to be brought to Mumbai this week.

His arrival, however, is making officials of Arthur Road prison jittery. Though Babloo has been behind bars for over a decade, he has a knack of controlling his gang operations from within the prison.

“We are worried because the mobile jammers installed in the prison are not functional since the last two months,” said a senior official on condition of anonymity. “Babloo is notorious for managing his gang even while in prison,” he added.

The official said that the renewal of the mobile jammer is stuck in the administration. The authorities now plan to submit a request letter to government requesting them to hurry up the renewal process.

Babloo is accused of conspiring the kidnapping of Vishwanath Mittal, owner of Mittal Builders, who was abducted by four persons from the vicinity of Express Towers in Nariman Point.

He allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs4 crore. The case will be tried in the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court.

The flamboyant gangster, who was extradited from Singapore in August 1995, is accused in at least 45 other criminal cases, including murder, extortion, rioting and possession of illegal arms. He is currently lodged at Naini Jail in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He will be brought to the city in transit remand, police said.

Babloo who formed his own gang in the 1990s soon owed allegiance to the D-company. However, he broke away and joined the Chhota Rajan gang. He shot to fame in the underworld after he allegedly eliminated LD Arora, a customs officer in Mumbai in 1993 after he was transferred to Allahabad.
