When non-resident Indian (NRI) Premesh Narsimulu learnt that a taxi driver from Sahar airport had fleeced Rs13,050 from his son, he sent a complaint by e-mail to the Mumbai police from his home in South Africa. On Monday, the Sahar police arrested the driver, Anil Patel, 39, and a hotel manager on the charge of robbing Kehar Narsimulu.

Kehar, 16, and his friend Christopher Parker came to Mumbai on September 26 from Johannesburg. The two landed at the Sahar international terminal around 12:30 am. On a student-exchange programme, they had a flight to catch for Delhi at 5 am.

Since they had time, they came out of the terminal. They were approached by Patel, who suggested to them that they could spend the time at a hotel in Kurla. He took them to Hotel Kamraan Residency in his taxi (no: MH04-DE-3786), an officer from the Sahar police station said. On reaching the hotel, Patel demanded $290 (Rs13,050) from Kehar and Parker, he said.

“Kehar told the hotel manager, Kishore Subba Shriyan, the amount being charged was unreasonable and asked him to intervene. But the manager sided with the driver. Kehar was forced to pay the driver the amount,” the officer said.

Fifteen days later, Kehar returned to South Africa and narrated the incident to his father. Premesh sent a complaint by e-mail to the Mumbai police. The Sahar police took up the case and arrested Patel and Shriyan.

“We have recovered the $290 from the accused. The two have been charged for robbery under the Indian Penal Code,” Dilip Patil, senior inspector of the Sahar police station said. “We have taken this matter seriously. We urge people who have had similar experience to come forward and lodge a complaint with us through any means of communication,” he said.
