It may turn out to be a war of nerves for chief minister Ashok Chavan and the Democratic Front government in the winter session of the state legislative assembly beginning on December 15 in Nagpur.

In addition to the Shiv Sena-BJP combine, the government will have to deal with the opposition role of suspended Congress MLA Narayan Rane. Besides taking a pledge to work against the government, Rane has also chosen the orange city to display power by holding a rally where he may announce floating of his new political party. But with Sena ready to negate Rane’s strategy, Chavan finds himself on a safe turf. “There is no threat to my government,” said Chavan.

However, a belligerent Rane said, “There is no ambiguity in my decision-making. I have
to destroy the Congress if I have to survive.”

Aware that he cannot afford to open up too many battlefronts, Rane has trained his gun only against Congress, not the NCP. Rane’s new strategy involves targeting Chavan’s leadership. He would also want to consolidate his base in Vidarbha. The Congress, however, has put a checkmate by already accommodating four ministers from the region.

Unfazed with the challenges ahead, Chavan said, “Government is a continuous process and we will not have problems taking on the opposition.” On Rane, he maintained, “I don’t count him much as he is no longer in Congress.”

Rane has the support of six MLAs and one MLC in the state legislature. Congress leadership reckons that if Rane gets aggressive on the floor,  Shiv Sena, lead by Ramdas Kadam, can be relied upon to silence him. However, BJP may use Rane to its advantage.

The Shiv Sena and BJP  have decided to transform the session into an electoral campaign, and are unwilling to share space with a third partner (Rane). BJP general secretary (MLC) Vinod Tawde said, “Top on our agenda will be the terrorist strike in Mumbai and the Malegaon probe. The Chavan government will have to answer questions related to roles of investigating agencies and security.”

The agrarian crisis which saw maximum number of farmer suicides in the cotton growing belt will also figure during the assembly session.

Deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal has decided to lead the DF government from the front. “The government is ready to face the challenge from the opposition. We look forward to a constructive debate. We will accommodate their demands for discussions on important issues.”
