Twenty-two-year old Dhvani Mehta was exuberant after receiving news that she was selected as one of the five Rhodes Scholars from the country.

A student of Government Law College, Mehta will perhaps be the first Mumbai student to get the scholarship in law — in the last 25 years.

The Rhodes Trust announced the scholarship for studying at Oxford on November 2. While Mumbai students do manage to occasionally bag the scholarship in other subjects. The scholarship which is applicable for students from different streams rarely finds law students from Mumbai making it to the finals.  Principal of GLC, Pramila Rao, said, “The last time we won the scholarship was when our student bagged it during the late 80s.”

An elated Dhvani who opted to pursue her Bachelors in Civil Law (equivalent to LLM) at Oxford, said, “I think my interests in extra-curricular activities gave me an edge over the others.” Dhvani is an active participant in college legal aid projects, moot court competitions and also on the editorial board of magazines carrying students’ legal articles.

She is also a pianist and a Kathak dancer, and has a keen interest in pursuing environmental law. “The environment is a pertinent topic now. I want to work with a semi-government organisation and get involved in broader societal work,” said Dhvani, whose mother is a lawyer, and father a chartered accountant.

Mehta was selected along with Sushila Rao from National Law School, Bangalore (students from this school get selected almost every year), Rakesh Sharma from St John’s Medical College, Bangalore, Chimayi Kumar from Kirorimal College, Delhi, and Krittika Bhattacharjee from St Stephen’s College, Delhi.

The candidates were chosen by an eight-member panel headed by NR Narayana Murthy, chief mentor of Infosys and chairman of the Rhodes Selection Committee.
