KOLKATA: The anti-industry agitation that has gripped West Bengal of late might have been fuelled by a continuous fund-flow from India but routed through Bangladesh.
Although intelligence agencies are yet to establish the link, they have come across certain definite clues that hint at such a cross-border nexus. Reliable sources in the state Intelligence Branch told DNA that they recently came across certain documents that throw light on such a multiple routing of funds, first from some Indian states to Bangladesh and then from Bangladesh to Bengal.
The IB also came across newspaper reports in Bangladeshi districts bordering Bengal that hinted at involvement of illegal cross-border currency agents in fund-routing. The IB has placed a confidential report in this regard to the Bengal home department.
Intelligence officials say this unique overseas routing for use in funding agitations has not been happening from Day 1. It was probably brought into practice, when the vested interests started having doubts and feared being caught. The overseas routing was not necessarily done in cash. There are clues to suggest smuggled gold was used. The whole thing was done to con intelligence from establishing direct links between funding and agitation groups.
“That is why funds underwent multiple routing between two countries from the funding body in one corner of India and the final agitating bodies in Bengal,” a senior intelligence official said. Explaining the advantages of this multiple routing, he said, every time the routing is done between two agents in two countries, the prior link is broken and at times it become impossible to establish link between each phase.
