Public prosecutor says Abhinav Bharat treasurer did dealings through hawala

NASHIK: While seeking police custody for Ajay Rahirkar, treasurer of Abhinav Bharat, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Monday revealed that there has been financial transactions of over Rs10 lakh involving Rahirkar and some other accused.

“Rahirkar allegedly disbursed Rs95,000 to Major (retd) Ramesh Upadhyay, Rs1.95 lakh to Sameer Kulkarni, Rs3.2 lakh to Rakesh Dhawade, Rs3,98,500 to Colonel Shrikant Prasad Purohit and more than Rs5 lakh to some other people,” said special public prosecutor Ajay Misar in the chief judicial magistrate’s court on Monday.

Misar also said that Rahirkar allegedly received Rs10,73,200 by way of courier (hawala transaction), but the source of the money is not known. “The person through whom the hawala transaction took place will be available tomorrow,” said Misar.

Whether this money was used for acquiring RDX or for other purposes is yet to be verified, he said.

According to Misar, Ashok Kumar Chawala, a witness whose statement was recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) on November 6 before a judicial magistrate in Nagpur, said that Rahirkar deposited huge amounts of money in his account. This account is with the State Bank of India, Deccan Gymkhana branch in Pune.

On November 5, the ATS seized account books, stamps, documents, a diary and the original trust deed of Abhinav Bharat from Rahirkar’s residence. On November 8, Rs70,500 which allegedly belonged to Abhinav Bharat, was also seized from his residence. A spot panchnama of these seizures were produced in the court.

Rahirkar, according to the ATS, was also present in a conspiracy meeting at Indore along with Purohit and one Shyam Apte.

Rahirkar’s lawyer Nitin Apte admitted before the court that Rahirkar indeed was the treasurer of Abhinav Bharat, but has nothing to do with the blasts. “My client is a businessman who runs Rahirkar Auto Ancillaries Pvt Limited in Kondwa. He is from the Warkari sect which believes in non-violence.”

Rahirkar’s sister, Veena Rahirkar-Pore, a Pune-based lawyer, was assisting Apte in court.
