THANJAVUR: Chairman of selectors Krish Srikkanth on Monday hailed India's 2-0 Test series triumph over Australia, calling it a "great" team effort spearheaded by the "remarkable" Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

India clinched the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a gap of seven years after beating Australia in the fourth and final Test in Nagpur on Monday.

Speaking in Kumbakonam, where the former opener is on a pilgrimage, Srikkanth said, "I am happy and thrilled over Dhoni's men beating the world's best squad on our soil. I must say that the seven year hitch is over and slowly the transition is taking place.

"We will have to protect these players in order to prepare a winning combination in the 2011 World Cup. It is also necessary that we should keep maintaining this positive approach for winning matches both in longer and shorter versions of the game," he added.

Srikkanth lauded Dhoni's leadership. The wicketkeeper-batsman was given the responsibility after Anil Kumble retired at the end of the third Test.

"Dhoni's captaincy has been remarkable and flawless. His analysis of the situation as to what is going to come and handling the job on hand has been exemplary," he said.

Srikkanth also praised the contributions made by debutants Amit Mishra and M Vijay.

"All these moves paid off. Each one in the squad deserves accolades for their united performance in putting India on the high," he said.

"Hats off for Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag for providing strong opening partnerships for the bowlers to do the rest. Vijay has also chipped in well with his bat and fielding and Mishra's performance has been extraordinary. We now have a good reserve batsman in Vijay," Srikkanth said.

The former India opener was all praise for the pace duo of Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan.

"I consider the success to team effort. But individual performance of each of the players had to be appreciated. Our medium-pacers have risen to great levels. They were responsible in providing us early breakthroughs for the spinners to do the rest.

"This is how we in the committee wanted the players to play to their potential and be focused. I am sure that the present members in the squad will maintain the winning streak for consistency," Srikkanth said.
