NEW DELHI: Slamming the Maharashtra government for its 'laxity' in arresting MNS chief Raj Thackeray, the BJP on Tuesday said timely action would have saved many youth from becoming victims of violent attacks by MNS activists.

Soon after the arrest of Thackeray, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said, "Its a step which is taken very late. If the government had taken action on time a lot of the young men would have been saved."

"The late action proves the laxity and irresponsibility of Maharashtra government. The state has failed to protect the common man," Swaraj said.

Thackeray was arrested early on Tuesday from Ratnagiri in connection with the attacks on north Indian candidates appearing for a railway recruitment examination on Sunday.

The MNS has alleged that the Maharashtra government has acted at the behest of the Centre and arrested its leader.

The arrest of the MNS chief comes against the backdrop of mounting pressure on the Maharashtra government to rein in Thackeray and his activists.

Meanwhile, incidents of violence allegedly by MNS activists were reported from various parts of Mumbai.
