Encounter cop’s family refuses help

NEW DELHI: The family of inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who lost his life in the September 20 Jamia Nagar encounter, has refused to take any help, monetary or otherwise, from Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amar Singh.

Singh on Saturday demanded a judicial probe into the encounter after visiting the Batla House area of Jamia Nagar where the encounter took place. He had earlier given a cheque of Rs10 lakh to Sharma’s family on behalf of his party. “The doubts on the encounter’s credibility arise since I was informed that inspector Sharma had been transferred out of Delhi police’s special cell five days before the encounter. How then, was he leading the encounter?” Singh had said.

On Monday, the slain inspector’s family refused to accept any help from Singh or his party and said his statement was “politically motivated”. “My son laid his life for the country fighting terrorists. He was never transferred from the special cell. How can Amar Singh make such comments?” said the inspector’s father, Narottam Sharma.

“Inspector Sharma was not transferred out of the special cell. He was actively investigating the Delhi serial blasts as part of the cell. It was a genuine encounter in which the highly decorated cop lost his life and claims to the contrary are entirely baseless,” said Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat.
