BANGALORE/ MUMBAI: The four suspected terrorists who were arrested in Mangalore on Friday were brought to Mumbai late Saturday night.

The airport was swarming with police personnel late at night as the flight from Mangalore via Cochin landed more than an hour late. There were a good number of journalists as well, eager to get a glimpse of the suspects. But policemen in plain clothes pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes simply by  not covering the suspects’ faces. There was no confirmation about the arrival of the other two suspects.

The suspects were brought to Mumbai by a police team which visited Mangalore on Friday for the joint operation with the South Kanara Police and the anti-Naxalite cell of Karnataka to arrest the four.

The four — Mohammed Ali (56) of Mukkachari village in Ullal, said to be a real estate agent, Javed Ali (20), son of Muhammad Ali and student of Quranic sciences in Ullal, Naushad (25), son of Muhammed Irshad, a resident of Subhas Nagar, and Ahmed Bawa (33), son of Abu Bakker, resident of Haleyangadi near Suratkal engaged in petty business — were arrested on the basis of intelligence gathered by the Mumbai and Delhi police.

Inspector-general of police (western range) AM Prasad said the suspects were taken to Mumbai to verify whether they were associated with the serial blasts all over the country.

The Mumbai Police is confident of their links with the blasts in Mumbai and Delhi based on the material seized from them during the operation in Mangalore, Suratkal, and Ullal.
The suspects are scheduled to be flown to New Delhi after the Mumbai Police completes their interrogation.

Friday’s operation yielded computer hard disks, CDs containing jihadi literature, religious books, and two active mobile phones from Mohammed Ali’s residence. From Naushad’s house, a bike, diaries containing phone numbers of some terrorist outfits, two active mobile handsets, and computer hard disks were seized. Naushad led the police next to Ahmed, where they found five live bombs, 12 active mobile handsets, and jihadi material.
