MYSORE: The National Women’s Commission’s south in-charge Nirmala Venkatesh has demanded that Teja and Sachin, the two accused of abetting the suicide of their colleague MJ Soni (26), be produced within 48 hours. The NWC has taken suo motu action against the company after Soni committed suicide three days ago in Bangalore, alleging harassment by her managers. The duo has been missing for the past thee days.

Preliminary investigations reveal Soni had on September 11 broken down in front of the HR head and complained that Teja was harassing her. “She often said Teja passed rude remarks about her not getting married so far,” said Soni’s mother.

“She had complained that he had been rating her low on performance, despite her good work. But, the department failed to conduct an enquiry and ignored the case,” said Nirmala.  “When Soni complained to the HR about the two men, the two lodged a counter complaint of low-performance against her,” Soni’s father Jagadish Mysore said.
Moreover, the company did not have a cell to redress harassment cases which is mandatory, said Nirmala, who met Nokia’s managing director and the HR officers on Tuesday.

However, Poonam Kaul, director of Corporate Communication, Nokia India Pvt Ltd told DNA that the company had a grievance cell to deal with harassment cases.

“Almost 70% of our staff across the country are women and we have a policy to deal with harassment cases. The committee is headed by a woman,” she clarified.  Soni was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her flat at Vaishali Circle in Jayanagar 9th block on Friday. She left behind four letters, one each to the media and police, her parents, her elder brother, and to a colleague, Venkat.
