KATHMANDU: A day after imposing a ban on the import of Chinese milk products, authorities in Nepal have seized 10 tonnes of biscuits being smuggled via India.
 
The Birgunj Customs yesterday seized 10,000 kgs of Chinese biscuits being imported through Raxaul, border town of India, according to the officials.
 
The biscuits being imported from China through Birgunj check post have been confiscated with the suspicion that they might have been manufactured by using contaminated elements, Director general at the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control of Nepal, Uttam Kumar Bhattarai said.
 
Nepal government has imposed ban on import of milk and other milk products from China following the incident in which four Chinese children were killed and hundreds of others fell ill after consuming poisonous milk products.
 
The Department has also requested all major departmental stores in Kathmandu Valley not to sell Chinese milk products, keeping in mind the hazardous consequences to the public health.
 
Meanwhile, Nepal government has initiated process to import a new laboratory set equipped with modern facilities to test contamination in food items, the official said. The government is also in the process of importing a test kit from Singapore soon, said director general Bhattarai.
 
Nepal government is trying to contact with the Chinese authorities in order to tackle the problem linked with the the import of adulterated milk products from China, according to the officials. There is no plan to lift ban imposed on the import of milk products from China, the official said.
