CHANDIGARH: Sixteen players were banned in the Administrator's Challenge Cup after a medical board found they were not under the age of 17, a senior sports official said here.
The players were banned from participating late Monday evening by the medical board constituted by the Chandigarh Sports Department, JS Sidhu, Joint Director (Sports) of Chandigarh, said on Tuesday.
The board consisting of senior doctors from Government Multi Speciality Hospital, Sector 16 (GMSH-16) was constituted to determine the age of players participating in the tournament.
"We had detected 28 players who needed further examination to determine their age. After the preliminary examination, the suspected boys were taken to the GMSH-16 for X-rays and various other tests where 16 were found overage," said Sharad, a member of the medical board.
Sidhu said: "This tournament is approved by All India Football Federation (AIFF) and we follow their prescribed rules and regulations. Teams from different places like Punjab, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Mizoram are participating in this tournament."
The banned players include four from Mohun Bagan Sail Football Academy of West Bengal, six from Orissa Football Association and two each from Chandigarh Football Academy, Tamil Nadu Football Association and Himachal Pradesh Football Association, he stated.
Administrator's Challenge Cup is a national level football tournament for under-17 boys, in which 21 teams from different states participate. Chandigarh administrator and Punjab Governor, Gen (Retd) SF Rodrigues, inaugurated the first match of the tournament at Sector 17 football stadium September 1.
