After a terror mail source was traced to Khalsa College, other colleges have decided to put plans on hold

The recent tracking of a terror mail to Khalsa College has sent colleges across the city into a tizzy. Most of the colleges that were planning to go in for a Wi-Fi connection have now decided to put their plans on hold. With terror outfits becoming savvier by the day, these colleges feel they do not have the kind of technical expertise to ward off criminal minds from hacking into their networks and using it for sinister purposes.

Mocking at investigations into the Ahmedabad serial blasts, terror outfit Indian
Mujahideen had allegedly sent the terror mail through the Khalsa College network warning of more attacks in Mumbai and Gujarat. “If we get the Wi-Fi connection, it will be beneficial for the students. However, after the Khalsa College incident, I will have to give it a second thought,” said Manju Nichani, principal of KC College, Churchgate.

Principal of Hinduja College, Charni Road, Tukaram Shiware agreed that there are risks involved in getting the Wi-Fi connection. “Residents of Girgaum will be able to access the college network, since it is in their vicinity. Though it will be very useful, it comes with a major drawback.” Immediately after the Khalsa College incident, the college has cancelled its Wi-Fi connection order.

Madhavi Pethe, principal of Dahanukar College of Commerce in Vile Parle, said the Wi-Fi connection is not a compulsion, but it will help the college to be tech-savvy.
“Using advanced technology will be of help any day. It is always better to be techno savvy.

But we will have to think about adopting it now.”

But principal of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute, a Wi-Fi enabled campus at Churchgate, RK Jadhav said, “Technology can be misused in any form. If we have to use an advanced technology, we have to accept its ill effects as well. Such issues are unavoidable and can happen with any technology, not necessarily a Wi-Fi connection.” He said technology has to be seen in totality and not in isolation.
