NEW DELHI: The NDA on Monday decided not to move a no-confidence motion against the government, scotching speculation on the issue.

“The NDA leaders on Monday decided not to move a no-confidence motion. Instead, we would fight the illegitimate government and expose it inside and outside the house,” BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said after a meeting of NDA leaders at LK Advani’s residence. The meeting was attended by Sharad Yadav, Prabhunath Singh of JD(U), Ananth Geethe and Manohar Joshi of Shiv Sena, Sukhdeo Singh Dhindsa of Akali Dal(B), Brij Kishore Tripathi B J Panda of BJD and leaders from BJP including party chief Rajnath Singh.

The NDA leaders realised that a no-confidence motion, if defeated, would take away the cash-for-vote taint on the UPA government’s trust vote win. The NDA has also decided against the idea of an en masse resignation to protest the UPA government’s rigged win in trust vote.

Referring to reports of the government considering the postponement of the parliament session, Swaraj said the alliance would oppose any such move. August 11, the earlier date for beginning of the monsoon session, normally held in the month of July, is already a month late.

“Now reports say the Cenre is planning to further postpone the session. There is no reason to cancel or postpone of the session. We will oppose any such move tooth and nail. A debate on the nuclear deal is yet to be done in Rajya Sabha,” she said.

“This government is immoral and illegitimate. It has purchased and not won the trust vote,” she added.

Swaraj also put to rest the speculation that the NDA may keep away from the Lok Sabha Committee probing the cash-for-votes scam. The BJP-led alliance on Monday said it wanted the seven-member special committee to be expanded to represent more political parties.

“There is already a House committee with a larger representation to look into misconduct of MPs. The probe committee for vote scam of the Lok Sabha should have 11 members on the lines of the cash-for-queries probe committee,” Swaraj said.
