Starts a union which will offer services to artistes and technicians at half the fees than the prevailing rate
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena seems to be going the service industry way with its ‘more for less’ strategy. The MNS on Sunday formally entered the film industry by inaugurating its union — MNS Cine Workers’ Association (MCWA) — which will work for the benefit of artistes and technicians. The association offers services to its members for half the money than what the other unions charge.
MCWA was in the news recently, with actors Salman Khan and Suniel Shetty supporting it when the gag order on Thackeray was announced. However, the association was not functional at that time.
MCWA has also promised employment for at least 10 days in a month to its members. “Usually, the technicians, light men and set workers are financially exploited in the film industry. They are paid less than what is promised to them. We will depute our members at studios to check if the technicians and artistes are underpaid,” said a source from MNS.
Amey Khopkar, president of MCWA, said welfare of those who have been living in Maharashtra for at least 15 years would be the association’s chief aim. “We received several complaints that such people were not being deprived of employment in the film industry. We will help them find employment in the industry.”
At present, there are only a few organisations like Association for Motion Pictures and TV Programs (AMPTPP), Cine Costumes and Make up Artistes Association and CINTA, which are working for artistes and technicians.
“Low membership fees will help strugglers get the official card for employment in the film industry,” said Sanad Mane, a member of AMPTPP
