Khuda Kay Liye is screened at Chinar Theatre, Badamibagh Cantonment, specially for J&K governor

SRINAGAR: Guess who is watching Khuda Kay Liye? For the first time in 19 years of militancy, a Pakistani film was screened at the army’s Chinar Theatre at Badamibagh Cantonment here, the headquarters of 15 corps responsible for anti-insurgency operations and security of the line of control.

Outgoing J&K governor lieutenant general (retd) SK Sinha specially drove from Raj Bhavan to watch the film. Appreciating the movie, he said the producer had made a masterpiece.

“It (movie) has a very powerful theme which is very relevant in this strife-torn world. I compliment the producer and actors for this bold initiative,” Sinha, a veteran of the 1947 Indo-Pak war, said.

Uma Maheshwar, colonel general staff (media), 15 corps headquarters, said the film was specially screened for the governor at the cantonment theatre. “It was just one special show, that’s all. It was not meant for the general public,” he said.

Chinar Theatre is meant for the entertainment of jawans and their families living in the cantonment spread over several kilometers.

“This film is like any other entertainment. It is a human interest movie which promotes brotherhood and amity,” defence spokesman Lt Col Anil Mathur said. The film was recently released in Neelam Cinema, the lone theatre operating in the Kashmir valley, but failed to pull the crowds.

After the militant ban on cinemas in 1990, all the nine theatres in Srinagar ceased to function, till the National Conference government led by Dr Farooq Abdullah managed to persuade some of them to restart operations.

Broadway was the first theatre to reopen, but soon shut down due to lack of business. Militants attacked Regal Cinema on the day it reopened, killing four people and forcing its instant closure.

Now, only Neelam Cinema is functional, that too amid tight security.

“We watched Khuda kay Liye on DVD as we cannot risk going to cinemas because of the militant threat,” movie buff Maqsood Ahmad said.
