ISLAMABAD: The massive show of strength by the anti-Musharraf elements outside Parliament House on Friday following a historic long march has exerted enormous pressure on PPP Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari to reinstate the deposed judges as early as possible as he is being openly accused by his coalition partners of siding with Pervez.

While the massive gathering of the masses in Islamabad has been described as a referendum against Musharraf, there are many in the government circles who say it was also an anti-Zardari show of strength by the masses who believe the PPP leader is converting Benazir Bhutto's anti-establishment party into a pro-establishment 'B' team of the dictator.

In its front page comment on Saturday, Pakistan's leading English daily The News stated: “The long march has also proven another unfortunate fact, a totally avoidable one: the PPP is standing on the wrong side of what the people of Pakistan want.

Almost everyone who knows the PPP would agree that if Benazir Bhutto would have been alive, she would never have allowed such a massive show of strength against her own party”.

Analysts believe that another ironic fallout of this show would be a massive backlash within the PPP itself as bulk of the party leadership, which for years fought with all other pro-democracy forces, would not like to be left behind standing in a corner as a collaborator with the dictator.

On Friday night, when the crowds had gathered before the Parliament House, a friend reportedly sent a message to Zardari saying: “You can still steal the show. Tell your PM to go and announce that Musharraf will be impeached tomorrow and the judges would be restored”.

However, Zardari reportedly responded: “Let my elder brother Sharif take the credit”.
