Biharis want Lalu Prasad to stay away from the outsider controversy.

“Lalu Prasad and his party are commenting on Raj and Bal Thackeray for political gains,” said UK Singh, general secretary of Bihar Association, an organisation of Biharis living in Mumbai for three generations.

“But we don’t  need their sympathy as we are safe in Mumbai. Allow us to face the situation. Lalu and his  party men are creating misunderstandings among communities.”

The Bihar Association, founded in 1952, is one of the oldest cultural associations of the Bihari community. Singh criticised Lalu Prasad, saying he had no right to speak for the community.

“If he was so worried about the Bihari community, he should have created lots of job opportunities in Bihar when he was in power for 15 years,” he said.

Members of the association, who met informally over the weekend, also condemned the action of some Rashtriya Janata Dal MLAs who did not let Bihar governor RS Gavai to speak in the state assembly.

“The governor is a constitutional authority; and we should respect it. We want to tell the people of Bihar that we are safe and in a position to face any situation,” Singh said.

Another association member RD Singh said, “We have been staying in Mumbai for long. Our children go to schools in Mumbai. We have almost become a part of Maharashtra’s culture. We celebrate each and every festival in Mumbai in the same spirit.”

Lalu Prasad was trying to gain publicity by making provocative statements on the MNS issue. “Every year we celebrate chhath pooja in Mumbai as it’s our ritual,” he said.

“Why is Lalu trying to make it a political issue? Why is he trying to make chhath pooja celebration a challenge? His comments can create trouble for us.”
