Vandana Sajnani’s name is synonymous with theatre. In fact, her recent play ‘A Perfect Divorce’ has toured most metros. However, what Vandana is looking forward to this year is an interesting diversion in her career.
Vandana will be returning to TV after a long time as Maya in ‘Babul Ka Aangan Chootey Na’ (to be launched on Sony). She will also be debuting as a director on the big screen in a comedy based on her play ‘A Perfect Wedding’.
A visibly excited Vandana says, “I was quite active on TV with ‘Sarhadein’, ‘Kartavya’, ‘Sukanya’ and ‘Shaheen’. However, I got busy with producing and directing plays.
TV schedules are also very taxing. People shoot for 40 days a month! Hence, I took up only episodic roles. However, the role of Maya in ‘Babul...’ is interesting and the producers have asked for only seven days a month.”
Quiz her about her directorial debut and she says, “When I was staging my play ‘A Perfect Wedding’, some producers came up to me and said, ‘Why don’t you direct this for us?’ My jaws dropped.
I thought I was only good at working on stage. Making people act in films, putting up with their tantrums is just not my cup of tea. But eventually I agreed.
Of course, since the medium changes, the plots and the characters needed to be re-worked.” She continues,“The film is expected to go on the floors in three months. Though I like films like ‘Taare Zameen Par’, I prefer sticking to my forte—comedy,” she adds.
So who will she cast in the film? “Either Rahul Bose or Akshaye Khanna,” she says adding, “Having Shahid Kapur would be a coup (Shahid is her beau Rajesh Khattar’s ex-wife Neelima Azim’s son from her previous marriage to Pankaj Kapur). He is really good in ‘Jab We Met’. It is his best film. He has put his heart and soul into it.”
What is she looking forward to in this year? “I wish to get lots of awards because they encourage me to do good work. On the personal front I want to settle down ,” she blushes.
