MUMBAI: While our ministers are still pondering with issues on how to increase crop produce and resolve shortage of wheat and other cereals, four final year engineering students of Vivekananda Education Society Institute of Technology (VESIT) in Chembur have come up with a novel way to improve crop production through wireless technology.

Calling themselves ‘novices@work’, Veenit Mavani, Paras Doshi, Saily Dharia, and Krunal Dedhia are a proud lot as they have been selected to represent India at the international ‘IMAGINE Cup’ organised by Microsoft to be held between July 3 and 8 in Paris.

“There is an acute food shortage due to low crop yield all across the world. India is also facing shortage in terms of wheat, pulses, and cereal production which is mainly due to improper utilisation of resources. We have come up with an idea to use wireless sensors to measure soil moisture, nutrients, PHP level and temperature of different parts of land ,” said Veenit Mavani, a computer science engineering student of VESIT.

The data which will be collected by sensors will then be fed into a software which will then suggest how water, fertilisers, and other resources should be used on sections of land used for farming. “Conventionally, farmers treat the whole farm equally and distribute resources in a homogenous manner. However, it is a proven fact that land requirements differ according to temperature, moisture and PHP levels. A saturated portion of land will not give good output if more water is provided there,” said Paras Doshi, an electronic engineering student.

The team is now undergoing a 15-day training at IIM-A. “IIM will help us do a feasibility study on setting up an enterprise with our invention,” Mavani said.
