KOLKATA: In an attempt to tackle fresh incidences of violence at Nandigram in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district, the state government has decided to summon Border Security Force (BSF) companies there.

State home secretary Ashoke Mohan Chakrabarty said on Wednesday that the state government has decided to post two companies of the BSF at Nandigram. The BSF contingent, expected to reach Nandigram by Thursday afternoon, will assist the existing Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) companies deployed there since November last year as well as the district police force.

Meanwhile, Nandigram continued to be tense after the supporters of the Trinamool Congress-led Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (Land Eviction Resistance Committee) on Tuesday night destroyed several connecting roads to Nandigram to prevent police entry.

Chakrabarty told reporters that as an additional precaution, the sub-divisional police officer of Haldia has been advised to set up a special camp at Nandigram and stay there till the panchayat polls are over. However, the state government has overruled the BUPC’s demand for immediate removal of the officer-in-charge of the Nandigram police station. BUPC has alleged that the police officer was conspiring with the CPI(M). But the officer has been removed from panchayat poll duties.

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday told a vernacular news channel that a section of the media was creating an incorrect picture of the violence in Nandigram. Admitting that there had been some fresh tension in the last couple of days, he said the situation cannot be compared with last year.

Meanwhile, Union broadcasting minister and Bengal Congress president Priyaranjan Dasmunshi on Tuesday night demanded indefinite postponement of panchayat polls in the state.
