Support staff appointments approved but for only one series

MUMBAI: The working committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday informed that the three members of the support staff of the Indian team have been appointed but only for the South Africa series.

The Board members were told that bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad, fielding coach Robin Singh and physio Paul Close have been appointed only for the one-off series. Their appointments, along with the appointment of Gary Kirsten (as coach) and Paddy Upton (as he trainer) were approved at the meeting held in Chennai on Tuesday.

Earlier, there were question marks over the continuation of Prasad and Robin as they had signed up with the IPL teams.  A few members of the BCCI felt that there was a conflict of interest and the two coaches should either stick with the Indian team or IPL. When contacted, a top Board official confirmed there could be a chance that the two would be replaced later.

The Board also confirmed that Close, who was originally appointed the physio of the National Cricket Academy, may be sent back to his NCA duty after the SA series. “A search for a new physio is already on,” said a board official. Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the Board has called a special general meeting. It will be held in Bangalore on April 17, the day before the launch of the IPL.

The exact agenda of the meeting is not known but it could be on the IPL.

Interestingly, one of the figures present at the meeting was Dilip Vengsarkar. The selection committee chairman, it is learnt, made some important suggestions on ways to improve junior cricket. Vengsarkar represented the Mumbai Cricket Association where he is a vice-president.

Vengsarkar's presence is significant in the sense that not long ago the Board tried to amend its constitution to prevent the national selectors from holding a post in their respective state association. The move, however, had fallen flat.

Generally Ravi Sawant attends the Board for the MCA. Sawant was also there in Chennai. He attended the finance committee meeting that preceded the working committee.
