THIRUVANTHAPURAM: The Kerala high court has observed that central forces may be deployed in Kannur, where seven persons died in political violence last week.

The court reprimanded all political parties for encouraging  violence and demanded a free hand for the police in reining in the culprits.

“The only solution is deployment of central forces that would not yield to those in power. It is hoped that a gubernatorial move to apprise the central government takes place,” said justice V Ramkumar, allowing a petition to hand over a murder case in Kannur to the CBI. The court was hearing a petition from the wife of Mohammed Faizal, an activist of the National Development Front killed allegedly by CPI(M) workers in October 2006.

The court, which pointed out that police were instruments of their political masters, said they could do their job only without being influenced. It castigated political parties saying even elected representatives were involved in crimes in Kannur, where CPI(M) has been at the centre of political violence for decades.

The court also wondered why not even a single leader was injured in the violence gripping an entire district. The seven persons who lost their lives last week—five from the RSS–BJP and two from the CPI(M)—were masons, headload workers and auto drivers. Some of them were the sole breadwinners of the family.

Both the opposition Congress and BJP had been demanding the deployment of central forces in Kannur, which is slowly returning to normal after three days of bloodshed.

Home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, however, ruled out any such move after the BJP attack on the CPI(M) headquarters in New Delhi on Sunday. He added that those who demanded central forces in Kannur should understand that even the CRPF was unable to protect the headquarters of a democratic party in New Delhi.
