NEW DELHI: Around 25,000 volunteers will be in action during the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be hosted by the national capital.

The requirement has been projected by the Organising Committee and 8,700 volunteers would be utilised by Delhi Police for traffic regulation, management of pedestrian flow, security supports, help desk, frisking, queue formation and parking assistance during the Games, Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar told Lok Sabha in a written reply on Wednesday.

A committee would be constituted to select and train volunteers from colleges, NCC, NSS, as well as Scouts and Guides.

The minister said Delhi Police will undergo a special training programme for ingraining courtesy and politeness in discharge of their duties, specially during the Games.

A three-month trial class has already been organized successfully in this regard, Aiyar said.

In the next phase, about 40,000 police personnel are proposed to be imparted training under a capsule course of one year, starting this March 2008.

Delhi Traffic Police is organising training programmes for personnel working at key locations in association with Delhi Tourism and India Tourism development Corporation.

There are plans to train drivers of three-wheelers, taxis and buses as well, Aiyar added.
