MUMBAI: To ensure that the results of narco-analysis tests conducted on gangsters and terror suspects remain confidential, the Mumbai Police have decided that the tests will be conducted in the Nagpada Police Hospital. The decision comes in the wake of instances in the past where test results were leaked to media.
The tests were earlier being conducted in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chandigarh. In Mumbai, the tests were conducted at the JJ Hospital.
“We face hurdles at JJ Hospital during the tests. Sometimes anaesthetists are not available. Other times there is a long queue for the operation theatre, which delays the tests. Tests conducted at the police hospital will make the process quicker,” joint commissioner of police Hemant Karkare said.
He added that the project had been in the pipeline for the past two years.
Deputy chief minister RR Patil would inaugurate the operation theatre, where narco-analysis tests will also be conducted, at the Nagpada Police Hospital on Thursday. The cost of constructing and equipping the operation theatre was around Rs30 lakh. “Since the tests will be conducted in the police hospital premises, thorough secrecy would be maintained,” Krakare said.
According to Karkare, honourary doctors of the hospital would conduct the tests along with officials from the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). “We have the place, equipment, and instruments required,” said Dr SM Patil, surgeon at the Nagpada Police Hospital.
“We also thought that it would be better to conduct such tests in the police hospital,” said Rukmini Krishnamurthy, FSL director.
