LONDON: Men looking for love better give thought to their looks than bank balance, a latest study suggests.

Good looks and an attractive physique comes first for women when it comes to choose a mate.

The study conducted on more than 160 university students, revealed that women were motivated more by the good looks than status or wealth.

''Overall it was seen that men and women were equally motivated by physical attraction,'' Daily Mail quoted lead author Paul Eastwick as saying.

There were also no differences in the importance they placed on power or ambition.

''Good looks was the primary stimulus of attraction for both men and women, and a person with good earning prospects or ambition tended to be liked as well,'' said Eli Finkel, assistant professor of psychology at Northwestern University in Illinois.

The study was carried out on students with an average age of 19.
